Tell us a little about yourself….
My name is Ashley Lutz and I’m from the (very) small town of Lago Vista, Texas. I currently live in Austin, Texas with my amazing husband. I graduated from UT-Austin with degrees in Accounting, but found myself working in Customer Success at technology companies before I even graduated. In addition to bodybuilding, I love to spend time with my family in Austin and my in-laws in Dallas. My husband and I love to enjoy time outside, but equally love our Netflix nights.
How did you get started with bodybuilding?
In 2014 while training for my first full marathon, I found weight lifting as a supplement to my running. Lifting made me feel strong, made me run faster, and gave me confidence. After my marathon, I dove into powerlifting while dabbling in bodybuilding. In 2019, I made the switch to primarily bodybuilding and I’ve never felt stronger or more excited about fitness.
Where does your motivation come from?
My motivation comes from my family and making my loved ones proud. My Dad raised me as a single parent after my Mom passed away from breast cancer when I was 7 years old. He is the strongest and most caring person I know, so I always strive to be my best to make him proud. I also want to honor my Mom’s memory by being the best, stronger version of myself.
What are some of your greatest achievements?
In fitness: completing a 70-day charity bicycle ride for cancer from Austin, TX to Anchorage, AL with a group called Texas 4000, finishing my first marathon in 3 hours and 33 minutes, having completed 7 half marathons with my PR being 1 hour 39 minutes, 1 powerlifting meeting. In life: eloping in NYC’s Central Park last December, graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Accounting, graduating Valedictorian of my high school class.
What is your current training philosophy?
Execute. Whether it’s lifting or cardio, execute sessions at my highest level to get the highest return.
What are 3 tips you would give to someone trying to reach their goal physique?
- Resistance training is key. It will help your physique, but also your confidence.
- The best diet is the one that is sustainable for you.
- Experiment with different training styles to find the one that makes you most excited. That may change over time, so stay open to new ways of exercising.
What is your diet like? And does it differ on-season v. off-season?
I’m a flexible dieter and track my macros. I typically eat more whole foods because they make me feel and perform my best. However, I will absolutely enjoy some ice cream or chocolate when I feel like it (and make it fit my macros)! My diet doesn’t differ much from on to off-season, typically, but I do implement even more flexibility during off-season. For example, I won’t track my macros on vacation while in off-season.
When trying to cut down what type of cardio do you do and why?
When in a cutting phase, I prefer to get my cardio done via incline walking on the treadmill or doing the stairmaster. Either way, I have my YouTube videos or Food Network shows lined up and ready to watch!
What is your next goal?
Compete in my first NFF Pro Show!
