Tell us a little about yourself….
I was born in Panama Republic. I got a degree in Advertising, I got married and when I arrived in this country I dedicated myself to being a mother. My children grew up and that’s when I started posing as a model and wanting to make a career as a personal trainer. I got certified as a personal trainer and my business is called Elyte Trainer. I want to empower, educate, and inspire other women to transform their bodies and regain a renewed sense of self–just as I had.
How did you get started with bodybuilding?
I have always been an active person who liked to exercise since I was young. When I got back from living in Mexico for 4 years, I signed up for a transformation challenge at the gym I go to. It was a competition all over the USA. I got first place in San Antonio area and number 98 in the whole USA. That filled me with joy and there I knew that I was capable of going further in fitness if I put my mind to it. I began to train more constantly until I acquired the necessary discipline to mentally prepare myself to participate in a fitness bikini show. I have realized that as long as you are disciplined and consistent, almost anything is possible. Remember, a strong mind leads to a stronger body.
Where does your motivation come from?
I would’ve never imagine that almost 10 years ago I was 35 pounds heavier and the furthest thing from being proud in a bikini, much less to think that one day I would stand in front of many people competing in the category of Bikini/Athletic Fitness Competition. While we lived abroad, traveling and eating were my favorite hobbies. Then one day I woke up, got up of bed, stood right in front of the mirror next to my bed and I don’t know what happened at that moment, but I looked at myself and I said ” Elizabeth, that woman in the mirror is not you”. Immediately at that moment, I cut all my bad eating habits. It was a switch that changed my lifestyle in a minute and it has been that way to this day.
What are some of your greatest achievements?
I’m extremely proud of myself and my family. Coming to live in this country speaking probably 25% English, I got ahead overcoming language barriers. Together with my husband we gave our children the best education. And as parents we are proud of their progress. With determination and zero excuses, everything is possible in this life.
What is your current training philosophy?
There’s no crystal ball to let you know how things will work out. My humble suggestion is “Don’t despair”. It takes time, months, even years so that you notice those changes. They require a lot of effort and dedication to achieve theme. Ask this question to yourself “Have you given it your all and given it enough time to see a difference”? Your answer will please or disappoint you. Hang in there, try what you can, evaluate it and listen to your body, listen to your coach. At some point in time, YOU WILL GET IT!
What are 3 tips you would give to someone trying to reach their goal physique?
- Invest in a good trainer. Him/Her are going to help you achieve your goals faster and in a safer way as well.
- Ensure that you set achievable goals and make subtle progress rather than push yourself to meet great expectations.
- Have fun in your life and enjoy the journey. This might sound an overly simplistic advice, but it’s very important to enjoy your journey of fitness because it’s something you want to do for the rest of your life.
What is your diet like? And does it differ on-season v. off-season?
During the off-season, when I’m less active I reduce the proportion of carbohydrates and increase protein intake. I don’t want to go crazy during my off-season because I don’t want to gain too much extra pounds leaving La Vida Loca. I’m not saying that I’m perfect all the time either. I’ve always been an advocate of including a cheat meal in my diet once per week during my off-season to enjoy family/friends moments. During prep season; that’s a different story. I follow 100% my meal plan designed by my head coach.
When trying to cut down what type of cardio do you do and why?
I divide my cardio in two. Most of the time I use the StairMaster. For me is an effective way to strengthen and tone my legs, thighs, and glutes. If not, I go for a walk with my husband. The walk improves my mood and my sleep
What is your next goal?
The journey to becoming a great athlete is not an easy one. There are always obstacles to overcome and challenges to face. But anything is possible if you have a goal that you’re passionate about. And at this moment of my life as a Pro Athlete my main goal is keep competing and go for the big prize and win. I want to take this opportunity to say to any Athlete who is still striving for their Pro card “Don’t get discouraged”. There will come moments in your life in which you will have doubts if this sport is for you. I understand you perfectly. I ask you to keep trying and don’t give up on your dream.
