Tell us a little about yourself….
I was born and raised in Indiana, where I went to college at Ball State University. I majored in athletic training, with an emphasis in health sciences. I became a certified and licensed athletic trainer when I moved to Texas. I work for Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital where I am contracted out to Dickinson ISD to take care of the athletes of Dickinson ISD. This is my first and only job out of graduate school, and I just started my 23rd year.
How did you get started with bodybuilding?
After I lost 50 pounds running, I wanted to tone up my muscles. I saw a social media post from one of my former students where she had participated in a bikini competition. I wanted a body like that, without the bikini! So, I signed up for her gym, with her personal trainer and got to work. After finishing my 4th half marathon, I realized I was sick of running and wanted to try a new adventure, so I spoke with my personal trainer and decided to try a figure competition. Four competitions later, and here I am!
Where does your motivation come from?
I have lost a total of 90 pounds to this day. I constantly have photos come across my memories of me back in those days, where I was unhealthy and overweight. I do not want to go back to that. I started this journey to inspire women, but come to find out I have inspired people. To hear others tell me their weight loss journeys and that they started because of me, is continual motivation for me.
What are some of your greatest achievements?
Becoming an NFF women’s physique pro, winning the John Harvey Humanitarian Award in Athletic Training, having a positive impact on my students for the past 23 years
What is your current training philosophy?
“You will never always be motivated. You have to learn to be disciplined”
What are 3 tips you would give to someone trying to reach their goal physique?
Never try to do everything at once
Time takes time, do not expect results overnight
Allow yourself mistakes. You aren’t always going to be perfect, just don’t continue to make mistakes
What is your diet like? And does it differ on-season v. off-season?
During season, strict/strict/strict! No cheat meals
Off-season, carbs galore! (until training starts again!)
When trying to cut down what type of cardio do you do and why?
HIIT training (because my coach makes me do it!!)
Stairmaster/treadmill
What is your next goal?
To win a pro event
